How many times will we have to confront it and let it get us wet, retaining every droplets of sea spray that rejuvenates our faces, so that we may finally discover who we really are? We were born of water and we inscribe the drawings of children into it with our eyes. We see clouds in the foam that breaks free. We sketch the wave crest with agitated strokes. We must let our eyes scan the serene forces that form its surface, rising, falling until it reveals itself.
It trembles continuously, as if were a Turner painting, but here there is no imagination to designate what lies beyond, its rhythm conforms to our own breathing patterns. Imposing and turbulent, from our vantage point we can`t always know what comes form it. There is a constant wariness of the undulation which lurks in the canyon. Of the ineffable remnants released into the air, scratching at the wind. Shadows containing the indecipherable rumbles are formed. And the shoals are not always the same. No spume is just like another. Even the edifices that safeguards the nights of ships and seamen spreads out on the cliff as if impose itself, reminding us that on land those from the land are in charge.
It is with these eyes that we gaze at Ricardo Bravo’s images. They do not feel unfamiliar to us and even standing here, looking at this sea printed on canvas, we risk once again the fear we experienced when confronting it. This is a journey that forces us to stop and suspend the march of time, as if the waves themselves have interrupted their cycle so that we can seek out the meanings of who we are. Water. We came from it and here we return.
And we close our eyes for a moment, we ask once again, how many times will we have to say fear for the fear to cease to exist? How many times will we have to look at this sea until it engulfs us and become our paradise?
